Online Christmas shopping activity in the UK is off to a healthy start in November, up 23 percent in the first three weeks over the base month of October, according to a report released by comScore. Online retail in France began more slowly but has posted its own solid gain of 18 percent.
The study also showed that activity in Germany was actually 10 percent lower, a partial result of the trade union strikes in the transport and service industries that are affecting the German economy as a whole.
Cyber shopping activity, the focus of this study, is defined as visits to secure web pages of online retail sites.
“Over the next few weeks, we would not expect to see a huge increase in the number of online shoppers,” commented Bob Ivins, comScore EVP of European Markets. “But what we will see is a significant increase in the frequency of shopping online, and an increase in the conversion of browsers to buyers, which ultimately means more online sales this Christmas,” he concluded.
