A rare purplish-red diamond fetched $2.94 million at Christie's auction in Geneva several days ago, setting a world record.
The 2.26 carat stone, the largest red diamond ever to appear in an auction, was purchased by Laurence Graff. The previous record was held by a 1.92 carat red diamond that fetched $1.81 million in 2001.
At the same auction, an emerald and diamond necklace, which belonged to Princess Katharina Henckel von Donnersmarck, was sold for $2.01 million,
Christie's jewelry auction netted $54.26 million and the company reported that 80% of the nearly 400 lots were sold.
